The passenger in this ultralight was either very confident in the abilities of his pilot or he just wanted to film his own death. Either way, these two guys cut it pretty close as the pilot is forced to make an emergency landing following a total loss of power. The aircraft slams into the ground in a tiny field and comes to a stop just short of a line of trees. Notice how after the passenger comments on how close they were to total disaster the pilot says, "Yeah, but it was fun." Reminds me a bit of flying with Aaron.

Cessna 152 Lands On New Jersey Parkway

I'm not sure what's more congested, the NY/NJ airspace, or a New Jersey highway. Unfortunately for 44-year-old flight instructor Joe Rubino, and 58-year-old John Hannon they had to experience both today when the Cessna 152 they were piloting lost power on takeoff and was forced to make an emergency landing near Tinton Falls, NJ. The most surprising part is that someone was courteous enough to allow them to merge into traffic on the Garden State Parkway in order to put her down. Bystanders actually helped move the aircraft to the shoulder so they could keep on their commute. The aircraft was later loaded onto a flatbed truck and moved to another site.

(Don't drive this truck too fast, it doesn't take much for a 152 to want to get airborne.)

ATC Tapes Reveal Obama Emergency More Serious Than Previously Indicated

Remember that emergency landing of Barack Obama's campaign plane last month at St. Louis Lambert? Well the FAA has now released the ATC tapes of the conversation between the pilots and controllers after an emergency slide deployed within the tail cone of the Midwest Airlines MD-81. ABC News called out the airline and the FAA on how serious the incident really was after they both tried to downplay the whole event. It sounded serious enough to me the first time but this is what they found.

Row Of Seats Come Loose In-Flight Causing Emergency

A United Airlines flight declared an emergency and returned to Seattle after takeoff when a row of seats on the Boeing 737 came loose and slid into the row behind it injuring one passenger. Flight 1139 was on the way to San Fransisco when one bolt was loosened during the takeoff, forcing row 3 to come loose from the floor tracks and slide into row 4. A 61 year-old woman was transported to the hospital with a knee injury. FAA spokesman Allen Kinetzer told the Seattle Times that an "airline maintenance crew discovered the loose bolt on the Boeing 737 and fixed it." One bolt? To hold down an entire row of seats? I suppose if you want two bolts on your row you have to pay an additional $25.

'Big Hole' prompts emergency landing, passenger vomit

A Qantas flight from Australia to London had to divert to Manila in the Philippines this morning after a huge hole was punched in the side of the Boeing 747-400 after a loud bang was heard. Manila International Airport Authority deputy manager for operations Octavio Lina told the AP, "There were no injuries, but some of the 350 passengers vomited after disembarking." Lina said that part of the aircraft's ceiling collapsed and the floor gave way exposing the cargo hold. “There is a big hole on the right side near the wing,” Lina added. The hole, 2.5 to 3 yards in diameter, was more than large enough for the aircraft lose partial cabin pressure as passengers commented, “There was wind swirling around the plane and some condensation.” The incident and subsequent emergency descent occurred about one hour into flight over the South China Sea. I would assume the Manila airport is large enough to have an adequate supply of saw dust for that level of puke extraction.

Seven Congressmen On Board For In-Flight Emergency

Seven Texas Congressmen were on board a Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Washington D.C. when their aircraft lost cabin pressure and was forced to divert to New Orleans. Flight 458 was carrying Congressmen Ted Poe, Nick Lampson, Ron Paul, John Carter, Ciro Rodriguez, Solomon Ortiz and Henry Cuellar along with 111 other passengers when the problem developed on the 737. Representative Lampson praised the efforts of the crew by saying, "Continental Airline’s personnel and staff were exceptional; executing what seemed to me a textbook performance in emergency procedure. I was very impressed." Ironically, the Congressmen were on their way to the Nation's capital to vote on House Bill H.R. 6493, better known as the Aviation Safety Enhancement Act of 2008. Earlier this month Senator and Presidential hopeful Barrack Obama's Midwest Airlines chartered MD-81 had to divert and make an emergency landing in St. Louis due to an in-flight aft emergency exit slide deployment.

Air show interrupted for NWA emergency

The folks who showed up for the Dayton Air Show on Sunday got a little extra action for free when a Northwest Airlines flight made an emergency landing putting the festivities briefly on hold. The Boeing 757 was heading from Tampa to Detroit when one of its engines had an in-flight computer failure. The flight crew shut down that engine and made a precautionary lading at the Dayton International Airport, right in the middle of their annual air show. The show's commentator announced over the loudspeaker, "All right, a piece of cake," as the crowd applauded the safe landing and rollout of the 757. The air show continued after a 25 minute delay, but the passengers of the Northwest flight spent the rest of their trip to Detroit on a bus.

Obama's jet makes emergency landing

A Midwest Airlines MD-81 carrying Senator and Presidential hopeful Barack Obama made an emergency landing at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport this morning after a reported "flight control anomaly". The aircraft, N804ME, diverted to St. Louis during its flight from Chicago to Charlotte. After departing Chicago and vectoring around some thunderstorms, the flight crew said they started to experience "elevator control forces that were heavier than normal." A post landing investigation revealed an in-flight deployment of the aft emergency exit slide within the tail cone. Sounds like the airplane pooped its pants, along with all 48 passengers on board. Fortunately, the nose cone never separated from the aircraft. The NTSB is investigating. Hopefully it wasn't this guy.
